Style Guide: What to Wear On a Date

On 15th Apr 2015

So you finally have a date with the guy you have been swooning over for weeks! You are sure to be brimming with excitement---but underneath all that pre-date night enthusiasm is one anxiety-inducing thought: What am I going to wear?! Fear not! We have compiled some easy, charming and sexy date night outfit ideas that are bound to knock his socks---all straight from the runway this spring.

SHIRTDRESSES

In an anything-but tame turn, designers reimagined this classic shape with drop waists, double high slits, and more. This is a great opportunity to layer in case you find yourself doing both indoor and outdoor activities. A casual shirtdress paired with a matching blazer gives you the option to rock pushed-up sleeves in case the temperatures vary. Rock a pair of high heels to add a little bit more of a dressy appeal to your otherwise approachable outfit.

YELLOW

Before you scoff and say, “not for me”, hear us out. From amber and canary to saffron and marigold, trust that there is a shade of yellow for everyone. The trick is figuring out your skin’s undertone, and then finding the hue that best complements it. That perfectly sunny sundress can go from day to night in two seconds flat if you throw on a jean jacket and Western-inspired booties for a more dressed down date night. For a dressier date night, a cocktail dress in super flattering shape and the right shade that complements your skin tone will ensure that both you and your guy know you’re a knock out. And if you’ll be dancing, sensible heels are always a safe bet.

PRINTS

Fall may have brought us proper plaids, but for spring it’s all about the fun and quirky patterns with color. Think printed pants or a skirt paired with a flowing black top and some strappy sandals. Show us a guy who wouldn’t be into that! Dudes aren’t afraid of patterned clothes! A fun frock is attention-getting and shows that you like to a good time. Still afraid it’s too much for him? Tame the print with a cropped black blazer and matching sandals.

BLACK AND WHITE

The trend’s not groundbreaking, but black and white is everywhere. What makes this season’s take on the classic color combination interesting, though, are the various textures, patterns, and silhouettes. These hues are a no-fail, always! A curving hugging little black dress, a white blazer or cardigan with a pair of colored heels for an added flair and you have yourself the perfect date-night outfit!

CUT OUTS

It looks like spring 2014’s major short style is sticking around in 2015. Take the silhouette to work this season by pairing it with blazers, tailored button-downs, and high heels. A little show of your shoulders is a great way to get attention without bearing all for the rest of the world to see. Leave a little to the imagination by also being trendy in your outfit of choice. Also, a dress with strategic cut outs or illusion panels is the ideal way to show off some sex appeal. Stick with a simple silhouette and a solid color. This risky look can be seriously rewarding.

BLUE AND WHITE

If black and white is too stark for you, this subtle version may be more your speed. Give it a try when you feel like making a statement with little to no color. For example, keep the focus on your legs with perfectly fitted colored jeans. By wearing a simple white tank and streamlined accessories and some sky-high heels, your legs are all but guaranteed to be the center of attention in this great blend of color and hue. If you are in the mood to sport a pattern, a great option is a soft blend of blue and white to give your look a more whimsical and dreamy feel.

HEAD TO TOE WHITE

At this point, it isn’t about the rules of when you can wear all-white; it’s about how you wear it. New styling tricks include mixing textures, layering multiple pieces, and teaming various shades. The best way to show off a killer (faux) tan? Bright white! A little white dress is unexpected for nighttime and makes a great canvas for pretty accessories. Choose simple silver jewelry for an ultra-feminine look.

ONE SHOULDER CUTS

Believe it or not, your shoulders have become the sexiest part of your body overnight! Show them off in these one-shoulder tops and dresses (a twist on spring 2014’s off-the-shoulder ones) that are perfect for date night. Give it a dressed-up feel with a flowy midi-or maxi-skirt. Trust us, that minimal sliver of skin delivers maximum hotness!

ROOMY DENIM

Jeans are a given for any season, but this time around it’s about cropped, baggy cuts. Keep your tops slim to create a cool contrast. When you’re out with your guy, the last thing you want is to be fussing with your outfit the whole time. Stay comfortable with fitted (but not skintight) jeans, a striped tee, and shoes you can walk in.

KIMONO-STYLE COATS & SWEATERS

Slouchy, lightweight trench coats---belted just so—were spotted all over the runways this season. We’re fans and why wouldn’t we be? They’re a comfortable, stylish mix between a robe, a proper coat, and a kimono. A brightly colored kimono-styled shawl goes great over a neutral dress. Easy to shed as the night heats up!

Remember, if you normally dress funky; don’t hide that from your guy! A cool quirky dress shouldn’t be relegated to the closet just because you’re on a date—in fact, you can amp it up even further with statement accessories. Daring to wear something unique lets your true style—and personality—shine through! And that’s the most important part of it all!
